Gachet-Mollaret and Eydallin take the top spot in the tricky Individual race

The Frenchwoman has won eleven Individual races in a row, Eydallin back on the top stop after almost two years.

Val Martello (Italy), 16 February 2023 – The first race of the WÜRTH MODYF ISMF World Cup stage in Val Martello delivered a top-level ski mountaineering competition. More than 130 athletes from 20 countries tackled the challenging track in the heart of Stelvio National Park.

The men’s race consisted of five uphills and downhills with more than 1500 D+, while women had one uphill less and approximately 1350 D+. Due to the lack of snow and freezing temperatures at night, the descents were challenging, and the way to success was through mastering them.

Close battle of the masters

The men kicked off Thursday racing at 9:00. A group of the best Individual races was in the front from the start. Davide Magnini of Italy pushed hard on the second uphill but abandoned the race. The second half of the epic race was a battle between two Italian legends – Matteo Eydalling and Robert Antonioli.

Eydallin won the race ahead of his compatriot after a close battle. Antonioli lost at the finish line by only five seconds.

“I knew I was in good shape, so I tried to do my best. Rémi Bonnet was not here, so it was a good occasion. We were so close for the whole race. I went a bit faster in the last uphill to make a gap. I planned to take the downhill to the finish without risking too much. This time I won the sprint against Robert Antonioli because normally, when you are with him, it’s nearly impossible to win. Today I was lucky and smart,” said Eydallin.

The third to cross the finish line was Xavier Gachet of France, who lost just 23 seconds. Nadir Maguet of Italy finished fourth today as he did a week ago in Morgins. 39-year-old William Bon Mardion (France) lost only a minute to winner Eydallin in fifth place.

Thibault Anselmet, the number one in the overall World Cup, finished sixth and has extended his lead to 120 points. Maximilien Drion du Chapois (Belgium), Michele Boscacci, William Boffelli (both Italy) and Samuel Equy (France) closed the Top 10 of the men’s Individual.

France takes double in women’s race

Forty-five minutes after the men’s start, the women went on. Axelle Gachet-Mollaret, the most dominant Individual and Vertical racer of the past years, took it right from the start and already had a 30-second lead at the end of the first hill.

She continued her ride, had a comfortable lead at the end of the last climb and didn’t have to take any risks on the descent to the finish. Second Emily Harrop may have only lost 29 seconds, but Gachet-Mollaret controlled the race from the halfway point.

“This is the type of race I like and train for. I am happy to win so many Individuals in a row, and I hope I can continue with this winning streak. The race was nice, the track was beautiful, not so long uphills, tough downhills, but I managed to keep the first place,” said the queen of the Individual races, Axelle Gachet-Mollaret. She has won 11 races in a row and will remain undefeated in the Individual World Cup until at least the World Cup final in Tromso, Norway.

Current World Cup leader, Giulia Murada of Italy, finished in third place, her fourth consecutive podium finish. Alba De Silvestro of Italy defended the fourth spot, while Célia Perillat-Pessey of France came fifth.

Johanna Hiemer (Austria) achieved her best career result today in 6th place. Ana Alonso Rodriguez (Spain), Candice Bonnel (France), Lisa Moreschini and Giulia Compagnoni both Italy) closed the Top 10.

On Friday there won’t be any competition. The weekend will start with a Mixed Relay on Saturday morning, followed by the Sprint race on Sunday.
