Former skimo world champion Lorenzo Holzknecht killed in avalanche at age of 39

The International Ski Mountaineering Federation (ISMF) wants to express their deepest condolences to the family and friends of Lorenzo Holzknecht, who along with Sandro Dublanc and Elia Meta, died yesterday in an avalanche in Val di Rhemes (Italy). Lorenzo was one of the greatest athletes in our community, having won the gold medal at 2010 ISMF World Championships, 2009 and 2012 European Championships, and many more medals in ISMF World Cups and races like Pierra Menta or Trofeo Mezzalama.

The Ski Mountaineering family is with the Italian Federation (FISI), the Italian team and all the athletes that knew Lorenzo and competed with him during many times, as well as with his close family and friends.

On top of his great career as an athlete, he was also a kind, committed and respected athlete and mountain lover, respected and loved by everyone in and out of the field of play. His passion for the sport and the mountains will always be remembered, and his legacy will live on forever.

May his soul rest in peace.
