Regula Meier elected President of the ISMF

The ISMF Plenary Assembly 2022 took place successfully in the capital of Asturias, Oviedo, Spain

Lausanne, 16 October 2022 – The International Ski Mountaineering Federation (ISMF) is pleased to announce that Regula Meier (SUI) has been elected as the new President during the Plenary Assembly that took place on October 15 in Oviedo, Spain. James A. Moore (USA) has been elected Vice President Treasurer, while Josselin Cazaux (FRA) has been elected council member and Juan Jesús Ibáñez Martín (ESP) will be a new representative of the ISMF Compliance Office. All of them were elected by unanimity during the Assembly, which was a great success and proved once more the growth and good governance of the organisation, now that ski mountaineering has been included in the Olympic Programme.

After three days of successful and fruitful meetings, the ISMF wants to thank the host member nation, Federación Española de Deportes de Montaña y Escalada (FEDME), for hosting the Council meetings and the Assembly this year where FEDME also celebrates its centenary.

“We have a great future ahead. We have been growing consistently in the last few years, but we must continue on this path, confronting the challenges ahead. And in order to be more productive, to grow the sport and expand our presence, we need to enlarge and professionalise our structure”, said the new elected President, Regula Meier.

“We should not stop constantly improving the quality of our events, to enable our athletes to successfully compete internationally at their best. We are also paving the way for our youngest athletes, and I am convinced that the new format that we are implementing, the ISMF Youth World Cup, will be a fantastic platform for all of them to grow as athletes and increase our number of competing athletes and member nations”, she said.

One of the main goals for the ISMF for the next years is to invest in developing our sport, in terms of a number of athletes, quantity and quality of events, but also in terms of new National Federations. With the successful admission of Snow Australia, Corporación Ski Mountaineering Colombia SKIMOCOL, Azerbaijan Winter Sports Federation and Finnish Climbing Association FCA as full members and Ukraine as a provisional member. ISMF is now present on four continents.

At the Plenary Assembly, the ISMF remembered Mr. Pierre Dollo, co-founder of the Federation in 2008 and former Vice-President of the Federation, who sadly passed away the day before the Assembly due to a heart attack during a trip to Nepal.

After two years of celebrating the Assembly online, due to the pandemic, the members present in Spain had the opportunity to review and approve the financial statements from the previous years, and discussed the budget for 2022/23. “The ISMF needs to improve its level of professionalism and to achieve this, it is essential to increase the funds dedicated to technical staff for competitions, Anti-Doping, communication and also legal support/advice”, explained by the newly elected Vice President Treasurer Jim Moore.

“The future is bright for us. We are investing on expanding our sport, making our events more successful and sustainable, attracting more athletes, engaging with new audiences and find new partners that will make this journey with us to grow our sport and join the Olympic family. Me, and all the Council, are committed with these goals. It is time now to continue to work together and leave a lasting legacy on our sport for generations to come”, said the President.

Founded in 2007, the International Ski Mountaineering Federation ISMF is the global governing body for ski mountaineering competitions. Since 2016, the organization is officially recognized by the International Olympic Committee IOC. Its main goals are the promotion, regulation and development of the ski mountaineering sport worldwide. Based in Lausanne, Switzerland, the ISMF’s membership consists of 44 national mountaineering or ski sports federations in Europe, Asia, Oceania and the Americas. The ISMF organizes ski mountaineering World Cups events and World Championships. For the first time, ski mountaineering has been a medal sport at the 2020 Youth Olympic Games in Lausanne, Switzerland, and has recently been included in the programme of the Olympic Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026.
