Corinna Ghirardi (ITA) and Christian Hoffmann (AUT) are the new ISMF Master World Champions

The two competitors won both Vertical and Individual races scheduled for the ISMF Master World Championships held last weekend in Piancavallo, Italy.

Lausanne, 7 March 2022 – The local organising committee of the famous Transcavallo event designed a varied and technical track for the Vertical race held on Friday 4 March in the Friulian ski resort of Piancavallo. It alternated deep and more pleasant slopes, outlining a real competition for master racers chasing a dream. At the end, with a time of 24’50”, Christian Hoffmann of Austria was the first to cross the finish line placed in front of the Refuge Val dei Sass. The podium was completed by the Frenchman Yoann Caillot (2° place) and Nicolas Philipona of Switzerland (3° place) closing in 26’53”. Among women, the success was for the strong Corinna Ghirardi of Italy. She confirmed her extraordinary ski mountaineering skills with a final time of 31’20”, followed by Corinne Favre of France and Marita Kroehn of Austria.

In the morning of Sunday 6 March, always in Piancavallo, the grand finale of the 2022 ISMF Master World Championships was staged, the long-awaited Individual race, with a technical and challenging track embracing the two provinces of Pordenone and Belluno. The Austrian competitor Christian Hoffmann, Olympic Champion of the Nordic skiing (30 km discipline) held in 2002 in Salt Lake City (USA) and winner of Friday’s Vertical race, also dominated the Individual race with a final time of 1:33’45”. Corinna Ghirardi (ITA) also repeated Vertical’s victory in the Individual discipline stopping the clock at 1:57’10”.

The insiders of the Transcavallo Committee set up a race track in the spectacular amphitheatre of the Refuge Val dei Sass with a total difference in altitude of 1540 m and a length of about 13 km. The competitors had to face four ascents, with some alpine sections on the crest to be covered on foot with crampons on and skis in the backpack. The course also included the Alpago area, passing through the zone named Casera Palantina and Mount Colombera. The ridge of Mount Tremol, situated in the first part of the competition, thrilled both the racers and the spectators who, from the arrival area, were able to admire the silhouettes between the rocks and the sky.

Both new ISMF Master World Champions have always been in the lead of the corresponding race groups with a considerable margin over the runners-up. Marco Del Missier of Italy managed to win the silver medal, crossing the finish line in a time of 1:41’55”, while the Frenchman Thevin Loïc took the bronze. Among women, behind Corinna Ghirardi, Corinne Favre (FRA) and Chiara Musso (ITA) finished in second and third position respectively.

On the international scene, the ISMF is ready for the penultimate stage of the WÜRTH MODYF ISMF World Cup scheduled from 18 to 20 March in Val Martello, Italy. The organisers of the Transcavallo event, instead, are looking forward to the 2023 edition.
